Rubber or cork for valve cover gasket?
Hey,
I need to get a new valve cover gasket for my L6 in my 65 coupe - it's leaking terrible! I saw online the gasket comes in both rubber and cork. Any preference on which to use? I'm going to see what I can get local first though but if there is one I should stay away from, I will.
Also, does anyone use any kind of gasket sealant with the gasket when replacing one? Or just the gasket by itself?
Thanks
Warren

Cork works great for vc gaskets when you're running stamped steel valve covers. It actually swells a little with oil, which helps seal up imperfections. Problem is, eventually it does wear out, and it's also a one-time (or maybe two, if you're lucky) use gasket.
I much prefer rubber, mostly because it's reusable. I haven't had any sealing issues with mine, but then I have cast aluminum vc's. If you're using stamped vc's, make sure the gasket mating surfaces are nice and flat.
