Red face New guy and need help...

Hello! New guy here fixing to undertake a major task on a pony of mine and wanted to register with you guys to get some support/etc with this project.

I've had several ponies over the years and this last remaining one that I've kept is in need of some cancer repair. I think I want to keep this one too, its a little 1967 convertible with standard interior and 6cyl auto and it has definitely seen some better days. I bought this little booger about 7 years ago in New Jersey while passing through one day on a work related trip. The little car used to be a show car and was well taken care of by its former owner who was an elderly gentleman who was a mustang collector.

He was single, his wife had passed some years back, and then he passed away earlier that year leaving an empty house, a garage full of parts, and a few mustangs in various stages of completion. His kids sold his home and divvied up the vehicles, his eldest son got this car. Well his son had owned this car for a couple years but it was not kept in the environment that it was used to nor did it receive the care it was accustomed to. Firstly his son did not have a carport or garage to put his cars in, instead he had one of those movable carport tent looking things erected beside his mobile home and his wife’s car and his pickup were parked under it. The mustang received rather an ill treatment and was parked under the oak tree in his front yard, sometimes with a blue tarp over it.....great way to take care of your fathers work huh?

Anyway, a storm had blown through and knocked a branch out of the tree and punched a hole through the top allowing water to get in. The floorboards filled and it got soaked but get this....all the dude did was pull the drain plugs and let it air out! Of course one thing led to another and it wasn’t long till the wet carpet and under pads rusted out the floorpans and rockers.

When I bought it you couldn't even tell it had been a former show car except for the nice chrome and straight body. The pans were completely rusted out and the inner and outer rockers were too. The rest of the body from the rocker on up is actually quite nice and cancer free. I didn't pay much for it. I think I paid maybe $800 or $1000 for it so I figure replacing the sheetmetal and fixing it up will be worth it and will even it out. As it stands I won’t have to buy hardly any chrome parts, I won’t have to do any engine or tranny work because they are rebuilt and perfect (not even a bump when you shift it into D) as well as the driveline. I figure to fix the sheetmetal, put new upholstery in it, and do another paint job and it should be good to go.

I've bought all of the sheetmetal from NPD and am thinking about selling the two pans that I bought and buying and putting in one of their full complete pan units. I have the full rocker sets with inners and outers welded together, the torque boxes, seat reinforcements, frame extensions, etc. Pretty much everything underside is new bought except for the plate that bolts across the tunnel which I have and will reuse. I really need some help and guidance with this if y'all can assist. This is the first MAJOR sheetmetal job that I have undertaken.

As for me I live down here in Louisiana. I collect all sorts of firearms, old machines, old farmall tractors which I use, and vehicles when I can afford them. My collection used to consist of several mustangs but now I only have this project left. I have plenty of spares though, 8-track players, dash clocks, front bench seats, tilt away columns, and then your usual things. I also am restoring a little 1923 Model T ford roadster which has been taking priority with my vehicles since I'm almost done with it. I collect military vehicles and just recently imported a PLDvK 53/59 Jesterka (Lizard) from the Czech Republic which is a self propelled antiaircraft gun (SPAAG) and use it allot around my farm, also have an M35A2 as well. That's about it for me guys. I'd really appreciate your help and advice on this project if you can lend it Is seems like quite a daunting job but then when I look at it it doesn't seem that bad, especially if I do one side at a time.

Nice to be part of the forum and here are some links to my pics.

My little T project. First pics were of it in the junkyard in ND where I got it. I have sat on this project for about 7 years as well and have just begun whipping it together. Had the engine rebabbited and I rebuilt it. Put new wood in the body and a good coat of POR-15 on everything, now its only a little away from completion.

The Jesterka. Really neat vehicle, twin 30mm cannons, the engine is a tatra 912-2 air-cooled diesel and is a piece of machinework. Everything is on roller bearings, the mains, rods, etc. The mains are about the size of a soccer ball. Sucker weighs 11.5 tons and is 15mm front and 10mm side chromemoly compressed steel armor plate. Portal axles give me over 2' of clearance too. The Czechs make good stuff, with the guns off I use it as a big pickup truck, just did an LED taillight conversion too.

And finally the pony. I don’t have any good pics of it but here are some shots of it with other projects. You can see how dingy it looks but allot of its really just dust. I will be taking more pics and posting them in the appropriate thread.

I have not had to tackle a job that big so I really cannot help but I do want to welcome you to the forum. I am sure others with more experience will be able to help you out.

Thanks guys! This was supposed to me my intro post but I guess the mods thought it a tech question.

So do you guys know if anyone here has undertaken such a project? Is this forum more so a paint/body/customizing forum for mustangs or does it alos cater to restorations???

I'm planning on some mods later on. Got a 351W, T-5 5speed, Ford 8", and 5 lug drums for a V-8 conversion. Its just that with gas prices what they are and the little 200 6cyl in the condition it's in I might want to enjoy it for a little while.

I would enjoy it. I enjoy my I6 alot. I'm only one that enters shows. Yours is a rare one due to the fact that it is a convertible and less than 40,000 verts were made in 67.

According to dyno tests the 200 isn't 120HP it is around 80HP. With my mods couple people predicted I'm around 100+ HP with mine. I can give you a mod list if you would like.

You will enjoy the I6 while you have it.

I am in the process now of replacing my outer rockers, as far as the inner i think ittl bed easier than the outer, most of the welds hold the inner to the outer, as far as the floor goes i have heard the 1 pc floor is nice i think i woild remove both outer rockers, then replace the floor and then one inner at a time, make sure you have some support welded in there to make sure it doesnt fold in.

I think I will too. I was thinking of popping the plug on the intake and boring out the log a little to help it breathe a little better. Also I may bend up a custom set of headers and upgrade the ignition. I've heard the 67 convts were fairly rare and I would do a complete stock resto but this sheetmetal has got me down and I figure that because it is that much gone it really wouldn't hurt to resto rod it and put the V-8 in. Please PM me any reccomendations you have for the 6cyl that would help it out. It's really not that bad of a little engine I dont think. It does have power steering and is an auto so I know its losing a bit of horsepower from those.

It came with a factory dash clock and front bench seat so it may be that much rarer? I like the bench but I plan on putting buckets in it. I have a surplus of seats and a extra pair of 67 std buckets and its just a bolt in mod anyway.
I also will be putting a factory 8 track in it too.

Well my rockers both inner and out must be replaced and the units I have are already one unit. Are you saying put the floor in first then the rockers????
