starting problem
Hope some of you expert mechanics can help me with a starting problem on my 66 Mustang, 200 - 6 cyl - Automatic Trans.
When I insert the key in the ignition and turn it to the start position I get nothing. No engaging of the starter or anything. After I try this 6 to 10 times, the starter engages and the engine immediately starts. This usually happens when the car has been sitting for a while- like overnight. After driving it for awhile I can turn the ignition off and then back on over and over and the starter engages and starts the car every time.
Would appreciate any advice as to where I should start checking this out. The battery is brand new and connected properly(the lights will come on at any time) and the solenoid is new. Is the problem the ignition switch, the starter, the voltage regulator, or what?
Thanks you for any input.

start by cleaning all the terminals in the starter circuit; at the battery, both sides of the solenoid, at the starter, and the ignition wire at the solenoid, also make sure the solenoid is grounded well.
Now this may sound "goofy" but often a generous whack to the starter from a hammer will take care of this.
next; if that didn't resolve the problem replace the solenoid
