Pulling engine and tranny now what
I just prepped my 67 289 coupe to pull the engine and tranny. I am going to pull them together. What I want to do is do a whole new seal kit on the engine. It leaks at the oil pan, timing plate, and the tranny I think that's it lol. Redoing the engine bay also.
Since I am taking it out I want to paint it just not sure how to go about doing it. Should I just sand it down myself by hand or can I keep the engine intact and have a machine shop sand blast it or can they even do that. I don't want to gut it. It runs great and compression was 160-165.
Also any suggestions as far as anything else I should do since the engine is out.

Jon,
I would take the engine to a shop and have them clean it all at once, disassemble all the internals so they can dunk it. I plan on doing this same thing in the next week or so. After you get it back you can always paint it yourself.

I might do that I will call the shop and ask around about machine shops. I am in the Army and not close to home. Only good machine shop stories I have is when I took my stuff to my brother back home. I was taken to the cleaners so bad here is Columbus, Ga I am really scared to try again. I am better position to and have time to ask around. I have access to a paint both so I would like to dip the engine and paint it right.

Uploaded with ImageShack.usWe had the motor on a stand and used brake cleaner as a degreaser. After degreasing we used warm soapy water and a red scothbrite pad and washed the block & rinsed. I used por15 and brushed it on the block after taping everything up. It took two coats and turned out great and dried even. The cam covers and everything else be based & cleared after removal but I didn't break the engine completely down.

What a serious problem through you are suffering from. You should keep this thing in mind while you are doing this. You might use oil filter remove kit, Fuel distribution blocks etc .

Depending on how dirty the engine is will dictate how you need to clean it. 65 wildstang has the easiest method. Another way is to put the engine on a stand and put it in the back of a pickup and go to the quarter car wash with some Gunk spray. a couple of dollars later will get the big stuff off. then use a stiff brush and ordinary paint thinner to get the real tough stuff. finish up with a soap and water clean.
