Could be a bad cap. New ones are cheap.

You know your car well enough to know what is and is not normal so I'll take you at your word that it is overheating. Given that, you need to start chopping the legs off the elephant and figure out where your cooling system is failing.

First things first. What kind of shape is your radiator in?

Is your water pump pumping?
Take off the radiator cap, turn the car on and watch the coolant. Until the thermostat opens up it will just kinda shake and dance around in the radiator. Once the t-stat opens up you should easily be able to see that the water is circulating and flowing. Water being "pushed" into the reservoir doesn't convince me that the water pump is actually doing it's job. Water heats up and starts to boil over then it has to go somewhere. To the reservoir it is.

If it doesn't flow after reaching operating temperature then test your thermostat to see if it is opening up. Pull your thermostat and drop it into a pot of water on the stove and see if it opens up after reaching 180 degrees or whatever temperature thermostat you run. If it does then it's not the problem. If it doesn't, then you have found a problem.
