Default Fully rebuilding the 289

I have decided to pull the trigger on rebuilding my original 289 2 barrel to get some more power under the hood. I had the original C4 trans rebuilt about 2 years ago, and I don't know what torque converter stall speed is in there. My goal for the car is to get to 350 HP with a respectable amount of torque using the original block. Above all, I want this car to be a sleeper, it is my daily driver and is mostly street driven, with a few short distance trips on the freeway. It will never be on the track, strictly street.

A colleague who also has a 1967 mustang recommended a mechanic to me. He checked out the car and said I would be able to get to about 325 HP but the car would run poorly at idle and wouldn't launch well. I already picked a few parts out which I will mention later, but for cylinder heads which I haven't completely decided on, he recommended Pro Comp 190cc heads. I searched around on the internet for reviews and haven't heard very many positive reviews, if any at all, so it has me troubled because I don't want to put crap parts onto a newly rebuilt engine.

I've seen many people using AFR 165cc heads and others with Trick Flow Twisted Wedge 170cc's. I know that switching to bigger heads will drop my compression, which I will alleviate by changing out pistons. I plan to change out the carb to either a Holley 0-80457SA or Edelbrock 1406, both are 4 barrels with an electric choke. For intake, I am looking at the Weiand Street Warrior 8124, power band at idle-5500, or the Weiand Stealth 8020, with a power band at idle-6000.

Beyond that, no other parts choices have been made and I am still open to suggestions if it will be better. I am even open to going to a roller cam if that will be a big enough improvement or benefit. What do you all think?

.
Heres just 2 of several options.

331 stroker kit.
Afr 165 heads
Comp xe266hr roller
Eddy rpm intake
1.6 scorpion rockers
Quick fuel ss style 735 cfm carb.
lifters http://www.briantooleyracing.com/mor...r-lifters.html
Mill the block until the pistons are .003” - .005” below the deck
Balance engine
set compression to around 10:1

Option 2

Afr 165 heads or eddy street heads with different valve springs or trick flow 170 heads.
Comp xe264hr cam ground with a 112.5 lsa.
Race grind on crank.
Eagle I beam rods.
quick fuel ss style 680 - 735 cfm carb
lifters http://www.briantooleyracing.com/mor...r-lifters.html
Mill the block until the pistons are .003” - .005” below the deck
Balance engine.
set compression to around 10:1

below is a magazine dyno test done by richard holdener with what i consider "generous" dyno ratings comparing different heads including the afr 165's and xe264hr cam with 1.6 rockers.

I don't know much about stroking an engine, does that do irreversible work on the block? For originality sake I don't want to do anything I can't go back on for the most part. I don't plan on selling the car, but I don't plan on getting hit by a truck tomorrow either.

Option 2 seems more what I would want. Bigger cfm carb is needed? How lopey is that cam? I know that a shift kit was put into the C4 during the rebuild, don't know the specifics on it, just like the converter. I will have to look into that. Ignition is covered, I have a Pertronix Ignitor already in there.

.

stroker kit is bolt in and totally reversible . . it will have more bottom end power because of the increased displacement.

With the right mufflers, both options will sound similar to these at idle but the car won't shake much at all.

Ok, I like that it is reversible, but I am sure that it would be a costly mod. After a certain point I might as well just get a crate engine and keep the 289 on a stand, but that isn't what I have in mind. No space in the garage.

a stroker kit will add around $650.00 to the price.

the only stroker kit i would half way trust is one from ford racing.

you could also just get a reground 302 crank for maybe $300.00 and make it a 302.

Ok, so price wise between the two, what am I looking at just for parts? I know the heads will be a good $1500 or more.

no prob, you're welcome . . keep in mind a non stroker will be less

you can also go with a non roller cam and save 300.00 and buy the eddy heads and save some too or buy the trick flows and save some . . you can buy the standard quick fuel carb and save 150.00
