Gas mileage help!
ok guys I need any suggestion if any to increase gas mileage, or I don't know this may be what im supposed to get? I have a 1965 coupe that I have a 68 F code 302. its been completely rebuilt. bored 30 over 289 cam, edelbrock intake, 600cm Holley. I do have AC (new) and just recently installed power steering. oh its a 5 speed T5. Im getting 12-13 mpg city. is this good bad or is that just the nature of the beast!
Thanks

Welcome to the world of 1965 when gas was less than 50 cents a gallon. Did I mention $6 fill up? And they checked your oil and cleaned your windshield! No one cared about mileage back then only how many S&H Green stamps or free glasses you got. That 13 mpg around town sounds pretty good. If you want better mileage get rid of the Holley and go to one of the throttle body fuel injection systems, lower the rear end ratio into the low 3's and keep your foot off the gas.

The original 289/302 weren't bad on gas, but they didn't have a cam that matched up with a 600 cfm Holley. I'm guessing your getting close to 300 HP out of your engine, these were more like 200 when they came out. Hot cam & 600 Cfm carb =sh!tty mileage in the city. Nothing you do to the differential will make a difference in the city, since you have a 5 speed, prob won't make much difference on the highway either.

I have a 331 that dynoedat 390 hp 400ftlbs of torque.
I also have a t5 with a holly 670. My gas milage depends on how I drive it. If I am light on the pedal, I can get about 16 to 17mgp. But most of the time I get 10.
I have the dist. set up, 10* iniyial advance (its where the likes it) carb jetted right where it needs to be.
5th gear makes all the difference. Use it and it will help.
BTW, yesterday I was driving my buddies HellCat and passed a **** Honda insight that said 47mpg on the back. I was getting 7mpg in the hellcat. Who do you think was happier? I'll take the 707hp any day of a wuss bag crap car.
Burn gas, burn rubber, listen to rock & roll and Be American. F the rest
