I think he means to run it to the hot side of the starter solenoid which is the same as running it to the battery except probably more convenient. The alternator probably has a spade terminal for a positive ground, but is also grounded through the case, so make sure it makes a good connection to the engine block at the mounting points. Running a single wire alternator with either the ground or positive output not connected to the battery is a sure way to quickly blow the internal diodes.
