C4 tranny locked up.
i have a 64' C4 tranny, and when i put into drive or reverse the car will chirp the tires a bit then stall out. im guessing the torque converter is locked up to give no slipage. but want i would like to know if the problem is with the actual torque converter that needs to be replaced, or something to do with the valve body getting stuck on "lock up"?? thanx for any help..

so u raplaced ur tranny and a new torque converter??? and what was the result? do u still have the same problem?? i also got some advise that this problem doesnt sound like a tranny prob. it sounds like something is wrong with my engine. which would make sense since i cant get the damn thing to idle.. only reason it stays on is because it reved up to like 1200 rpm. but anyone think this is a motor prob?? thanx</P>

i replaced the tranny and the converter and it works excellent. when you put it in gear does it act like it wants to go? Will it roll in neutral. Mine wouldnt. If so i would say it is your tranny.

if i put in nuetral it will go. if i put it in drive, and let my foot off the brake it will go... but as soon as i put enough pressure on the brakes to make it stop it dies. i recently had some local mechanic check it out.. he said its my carb. and i just did the rebuild on it. but i guess a carb expert should take a look at it. but i dont understand why the carb is the prob. i have a 289 4v...by the way.</P>

if your idle is set around 1200 that sounds a bit high...... when you put it in gear at that rpm the converter is already starting to pull......... try getting it to idle down around 700 or 800...... that's where mine is set.... if you can't get it to idle down to that rpm range something is wrong and it isn't your tranny...... could be carb, (for example, stuck on high idle/choke setting or you botched something up when you rebuilt it...... ) .... another thing it could be is a vaccum leak..... did you replace gaskets with the new carb??? make sure all the hoses and vaccum lines are connected???? .... something iscausing it to idle too high and is the first problem to fix....... once that is fixed i would bet your tranny problem disappears with it...</P><edited><editID>Jay (imoRFT)</editID><editDate>38005.7948726852</editDate></edited>

ok... well i finally did get my idle to get down to 700rpm or so. The problem was my distributer was a bit retarted. So, I kept rotating clockwise till it let the car idle. I did get my timing light back from my friend and tried to time it but the marks where way off. so, i dont really know if the timing light is off, or i jumped a tooth on the timing chain?? im lost for now....
