Default C4 Problem

I have a 69 302 coupe with the C4. Started it up after 10 months storage. Will not go into gear. Has anyone had a similar problem, and can this situation be fixed without pulling the tranny out?

i have a 69 fastback that had a 302 and has a C4. the problem i had was that the shifter would slip around and wouldnt lock. would slide from P down to 1 and back without pressing the button. if thats the problem you have try checking the bolt/nut under the shifter plate. if its a different problem maybe the tranny needs to have a gear or two replaced

Did check your fluid level and vacuum line to the trany? If all is ok try a can of seafoam trans tune it works wonders.
cleans the valvebody and trany internals. If you use it put about 200 or 300 miles on and flush out your trany and put in a
new filter and fluid.
We have used it many times and have had great results.

Yeah, probably low on tranny fliud, or a vacuum leak.

Will not go into gear
do you mean the lever won't move into position, or do you mean that when you put it in drive nothing happens....?

my tranny wouldn't shift into drive (or any other gears) when i moved the shifter to the position...

it was the seals that were bad in mine...i had the tranny rebuilt with a mild shift kit about 2 years ago and not a problem since.

i've heard others having issues with these seals also...

if it isn't low, try pennzoil synchromesh, works wonders. i had a celica and it would grind all the time, but it worked like a new tranny when i put that synchromesh in it. find it at autozone. i tried expensive redline gear oil, and that **** didn't even work. go with the yellow bottle!

Check the fluid level. Check to ensure you have vacuum at the modulator. Check the shift linkage for slipping. A shop can perform an air pressure test of the clutch packs by removing the pan and valve body.

im sure its just low if it worked good before it was stored. alot of times on fords the pan gasket will leak from sitting and then it will spill its trans fluid and wont have enough to get going. and for a couple of your guys post it sounded like you guys think his tranny is a stick so if you dont know a C-4 is a automatic.

I dont think anybody here, thought it was a stick. Well, someone was talking about something for synchromesh, which is mainly a term for sticks, but it can still apply to an automatic.

syncromesh is designed for automatic transmissios, but works well in both.
