Default New Rear End 8.8 - DIY

I have read that if I was changing the gears and redoing the rearend that I should have a mechanic do it. I have decided not to rebuild the rearend but instead swap it out for another. I am somewhat mechanical minded but have never changed a rearend out. Would you say that I should be able to do this or should I turn it over to a pro? Thanks.

Unbolt old. Bolt in new. Pretty simple. Easier (by technical comparison) than changing gears.

You are right, the current rear end is suprisingly shot. The person before me really did something bad to it because it is all beginning to degrade. You look inside and there is metal shavings everywhere. I don't know how this could happen but it did.

Before you swap it in, take the axle to a driveline shop and have them go through it - it's generally cheaper to have it done when they don't have to fight with a vehicle. Replace the seals and bearings.

I helped my buddy swap axles on his truck - took a few hours (and several trips to the hardware store for all of the misc parts).
