Default HOW DOES A FUEL FILTER WORK EXACTLY?

Can anyone give me a good description of exactly how it works?

I know that "the fuel enters a glass bowl and passes up through the filter screen and out through an outlet. Any water or solid material which is trapped by the filter will fall to the bottom of the glass bowl where it can be easily seen and removed" in most applications, but what exactly does that entail? Let's have the mechanics and geniuses first...

Thanks

Fuel goes through it, it filters out impurities, there you go

I need to know specific parts to it, and how they work in conjunction...

its just a cylinder shaped thing with a screen in the middle. fuel passes through this and filters out any particles. when a fuel filter becomes clogged it means the screen is covered in so many particles that fuel can no longer move through it. thats when you toss the old one and put in a new one.

can you show where the quote is from?

if the filter is rejecting water, it has a hydrophobic element. there are plenty of polymers than can be manipulated into a fine mesh which generally repel water. however, i don't think that type of element has widespread automotive use as most of fuel filters these days are sealed units that cannot be emptied or serviced in any way other than replacement.

agree with Monch on this one, I haven't seen one of those old glass bowl fuel filters in many a year now. the newer fuel filters often use a specially treated paper filter element to remove debris from the fuel and are disposable, once they plug you throw them away. there are some fuel filters made from a very finely woven wire mesh screen material. and some carburetors use a sintered bronze filter cartridge mounted right in the fuel inlet fitting on the caburetor. if water gets to one of these, it will plug it up and the car won't run, trust me!

uh...Fuel filters don't filter out water. Diesel trucks though use a special water seperator container before the fuel filter since diesel fuel is hygroscopic.

Have you ever made coffee in the morn?
Do you like the grounds when they are in your coffee?
You replace the filter everytime you make new coffee right?
