Will a 3.73 gear screw up my AOD shift points? 5.0
Hi,I have a 93 5.0 vert. I have purchased a 3.73 gear for the rearend. The tranny is AOD, Will the gear mess up my shift points?? I'm thinking it will shift too soon, maybe WAY too soon. If so does anyone know the best remedy? Thanks!! Bob

yes it will shift a lot sooner. i have 3.90's and an aod. accelerating slowly i'm in o/d by 35 mph.
doesn't really matter though because it still shifts normal under wot.

I think that tranny shifts via throttle pressure and governor pressure which are all controlled by the tranny internals not the computer. The E4OD is electronically shifted through computer perameters.

you are correct. the computer has nothing to do with the shifting of the tranny.
i'n not sure how to correct it, but really it doesn't matter if it shifts early because you have the extra gear to make up for the low speed. make sense?

yes, it kinda makes sense!!! I just hate to have it shift so soon under normal driving, I'm not usually driving at WOT , I will have to look into it more, and if there is a remedy to the early shifts. There we an easy remedy on my 83 Z28 with AOD 700R4. there was a throw out gear thing on the side of the tranny, it came out when you poped the cap off. at certain revs, the weights flew out prompting the tranny to shift, sooo in the case of a gear change, you simply ground off some weight, thus causing the weights to fly out at a higher rev!! It worked very well.

just got off the phone with ford service guy who has a 93 with the 3.42 gear, he advises there is an adjustment on the throttle, that goes to the tranny, for a pressure adjustment, that also allows you to change shift points??

yeah, thats the tv pressure line. you have to be carefull adjusting that one: too little or too much pressure will kill your tranny. i have never noticed different shiftpoints when messing with it. all i've noticed is that it changes how hard the tranny shifts.
really don't worry about it shifting early. it still shifts at the same rpm, but at different speeds. go ahead and install those gears. the acceleration difference will more than make up for any early shifting.
justingt-i'm thinking it will shift early too, but that could be corrected by a tune. i'm not 100% positive on that though. ask in the 4.6 section.
