RE: CONVERTIBLE TOP WOES!
Ditto on the caps lock. I had a similar problem on my '98 GT vert. I told the dealer a thousand times what it was but, NOOO, did he listen?! First the service department sent it to the body shop. Next the body shop sent it to the service department. Next the service department sent it back to the body shop. Musical, frigin' Mustangs! F-i-n-a-l-l-y they listened to me and checked it out. Gues what? RIGHT.....I was correct. Not saying this is what it is but your '86 is a little older and may have a touch of cancer that could also cause this problem. In my case what had happened is the body mounts for the motor(s) had somehow disconnected themselves so the top motor was floating free and could not muster enough ongoing torque to adequately raise and lower the top in a normal manner. You may want to see if your connectors are rusted through and the motor is tightly being held down in place when called on to move the top. Could also just be a tired motor(s). They are not particularly cheap so you should look to a bone yard (junk yard) of some kind for a used motor. Ask someone at a local garage or dealer if you can substitute a newer motor design for your '86 model. The newer ones probably are much more reliable......progress and all.
