(Video) Rear Differential/Axle queries from London, UK
Hello Gents!
Just joined the Mustang world and bought a 2005 Mustang GT with Roush goodies (S/charged stage 1 kit and aero mods).
I come from a background of M sport BMWs having owned most of the M3s, but have always lusted after the sound of a 'charged american v8!!! Front engined Rear drive is what I am used to...
I have a question about mine - it seems to spin up the wheels nicely going one way, but not the other...
Link is to a video of having some fun in an empty car park...
It spins great in one direction, but doesnt lock up at all in the other direction - what is the standard differential/axle on the GT?
Ideally I want to change it for something that locks up well in both directions - we call them LSDs over here (limited slip differentials), but I have NO experience with these cars, so kindly ask for some knowledge to be shed.
I would like to know more about the rear drivetrain setups on these cars, and what upgrades are available, both from other Mustangs and aftermarket.
Looking forward to keeping it a while, and the joys of owning the beast - will share some pictures on the forum soon!!!
Thanks for your time,
Regards,
adil

Nice looking ride!
As far as the rear axle goes, the GT comes standard with a clutch type limited slip differential (we call them that over here as well)
As far as the limited slip grabbing in only one direction, I can only speculate maybe the clutch packs are worn more on one side? (it is a wear item and they do need to be replaced when they wear out just like any clutch or brake pad).
There are some good upgrades for the differential available in the aftermarket. The fully mechanical gear driven diffs like the Eaton TrueTrac or the Torsen are popular replacements which are more beefy and longer lasting.

Thanks for that,
There aren't many places that know what to do with these cars over here - will definitely not be taking it to our local Ford dealer! The ratio of skilled technicians to trainees seems to be 1:10 based on their reputation and previous work!!! Always have issues with them...
The plan is to come over to the states to visit family/holiday, and try to find one. The task will be how to bring it back with me on the plane...!
I will speak to some transmission specialists to find out if they can help. What I really wanted to know was whether this differential is an LSD as standard, as I will therefore not look to upgrade it, just get it reconditioned/find another.
All the Best,
adil

Its a standard rear end for the V8 'stang. 8.8" differential with a clutchpack style limited slip. Im guessing you werent the first to lay down some rubber with that car and its Roushy goodness. If you dont want to install a whole new assembly there is a carbon fiber clutch disk kit you can get. (not sure if the Roushes have carbon fiber standard or not...in fact im unsure of the final drive ratio in that particular car as well)
