Default Old Tires on New Wheels?

Hey guys -- I'm looking at getting 18" AMR wheels from AmericanMuscle that will fit on my existing tires (about 12.5k miles on them). I called a tire shop to get info about mounting/balancing etc. He told me that he does not recommend transferring old tires onto new rims because it may not set right. Is there truth to this or is he trying to sell me new tires?

Thanks!

I worked at discount tire about 10 years ago. With that being said I think this guy is an idiot. 12000 on a set of tires isn't bad at all. I'm not sure what shop you called but it sounds like he is just trying to sell you new tires. I would go somewhere else that does what you ask instead of trying to upsell you. Especially when the guy said that and didn't even look at your tires first.

Well I guess I might want to get more info to are you going with a wider wheel than you have now? If so how much? If you are and it's only an inch or less you should be fine but any more than that and it will strech the tires.

Great, thanks. He said something about the beads not lining up right because they got used to the old wheels and the new ones will be a bit different. Could you also give me a ballpark price on how much it should cost to take the tires off the old ones and transfer the TPMS sensors and mount/balance the new ones? He said $30 per wheel. Another shop quoted $50 per wheel which i think is outrageous.

30 sounds about right to remove old tires and put on new wheel especially if you have tpms. As for the beads not lining up that is some bs. I've put tons of used tires on different rims. In fact when I was working at discount and dealerships I new bought a brand new tire. I would alway find some that some one else didn't want and put them on mine.

No, the wheels on my car are 18" and 8" wide and the replacement is 18" and 8" wide. I don't really know what the other measurements are like aspect ratio etc.

You will be fine then. If he won't do it go somewhere else.

SpektrSVT,

Great choice, I'm a huge fan on the AMR's!

If your tires are in good shape & are the correct size then of course you can use them.

It sounds like he may be trying to sell you new tires, you can definitely get away with running those tires till they're dead LOL! Also if you're interested in tires we can definitely set you up with a sick wheel & tire package!

Let me know if I can be of any assistance!
