when driving or in park or both.

can you tell if the noise is under the hood, or under the car (exhaust)

I'm using the smart phone ap for this forum so I can't see your information. What year Mustang and engine do you have.

And to clarify, it's only while driving? While parked in neutral and you rev the engine……no tick/rattle.

Does the speed of the noise increase with engine rpm? Or speed of the car?

Does it sound like someone is tapping a screwdriver against your motor? Or is it more like someone is using a big hammer?

Does it get louder when the car warms up ?

Well, these are kinda hard to diagnose thru a forum. Trying to describe a sound, rattle or tick with words and have someone understand is tricky. But if the speed of the tick increases with the speed of the car and not engine rpm, that's a good thing as it's not in the motor. It's somewhere in the driveline after the motor, u joints maybe, or a stone or nail in one of the front tires. Hard to say without being there.

Manual or Auto Transmission? There are a few other things you can do to narrow it down, does the tick get faster as you speed up, does it matter which gear you are in? Engine noises will change a little when the car shifts. It's a little more noticeable in a manual trans. If the sound is totally speed related, you might want to jack it up and check for looseness in the drive shaft U-Joints. These are easy to fix, and pretty easy to tell if they are bad. (by the time you can hear them-you'll be able to see them wiggle when you turn them by hand). I would also check all of the tires like orangepeel suggests.
Btw, never get under a car that is on a jack. Always use proper jack stands. Never use concrete blocks.

Whoa, could you tell is exactly what the mechanic said? Just so you don't get ripped off. We'll let you know if his diagnosis is even possible. Because there are no rings above the piston. Did he say anything about "lifters"?
