Default RE: GEARS

Hi. Just doing research and I was looking at Ford drag packs. I noticed that they sell a pack with 3.73's for the auto trans and a pack with 4.10's for the manual. This seems to be the opposite of what I've heard people recommending here on these threads. Any idea what Ford's reasoning might be? Thanks.

The torque converter of an auto lets the engine rev a little higher right off the bat, allowing the use of higher speed gear ratios.

Isee. The lower the numbers the higher the speed? Thanks for the info.

I have a question or 2 about gearing. I've got a 5 liter lx with the AOD transmission. The car has 2.73's. I want to change these to 3.73's. I read that this would put red line in 3rd gear at around 100mph. It seems to me that it would be almost ideal for a stock or mildly modified car. 1/4 mile trap speed and red line at about the same time, right? Also does anyone know what sort of rpm's the car would turn at 80 mph , in OD? Seems like the perfect rear end for an AOD car. Kelly the noob.

I just purchased a 1998 mustang GT convertible with an auto overdrive. Someone in the past(ownership) has changed out the gears. I guess around 4.10. I believe it was set up fore the drag race. What I am going to use the car for weekend travel. No racing. I would like to know what was the stock gear ratio? What do you recommend for the type of driving that I will be doing? Thanks Jerry

On your drivers door jamb there will be a sticker and then at the bottom of it towards the right you will see Ax. If the second letter is an A then you have a 2.73 or a 3.08. If you have a C then you have 3.27.
IF the factory cover is still there you can check on the diff as well for a tag.
You can swap back or choose 3.73's as a middle ground. I think they even have 3.55's as well. Lots of choices.

You should start a new thread rather than posting to an old one, you'll get more attention that way!
