Use it when cruising down the freeway... it improves gas mileage.

Overdrive is nothing more then 5th or 6th gear depending on what transmission you have.

Turning it off prevents the transmission from shifting into that last high gear. Usfull when in very hilly roads or when pulling something heavy. If you leave the OD turned on in those situations your car will shift in and out of OD trying to maintain speed.

Another thread moved to the wrong place...

OVERDRIVE is NOT 4.6 Specific.... although.. it is Automatic Specific but there isn't an Automatic section. so this thread should have stayed right were it was.

Wait... do V6's have automatics? or do they just hook them directly to the drive shaft?

Maybe I am wrong... Maybe a V6 doesn't have enough horsepower to drive an Automatic transmission.

I think I have a problem with Authority.... should I take an Anger Management Class... LOL

I reach over and turn my overdrive off when I get ready to pass someone before I step on the gas. That way it only has to drop from 4th to 2nd and not all the way from 5th. It really helps to take off.

PW... the manual 5th gear is OD (0.67 ratio as I recall).

overdrive makes you fast :-D if your tryin to push her and you've got the OD off, you wont go anywhere in a quick hurry, but if you tryin to fly, turn her on and let her lose, but thats not saying much for me, i have a standard so i dont know how the OD proforms in the stang.........why am i still talking?
