Man you guys are making me jealous, I was planning 4.10's for my next upgrade but happened across some flowmaster A/B muffler's (slightly used) and a brand new (still in the box) Pypes O/R H pipe for $240. It was too good a deal to pass on and the car sounds wicked now! I'm going to have to wait until next spring for the gears as I've already gotta purchase snow tires this fall. My wife is going to let me hear about it I'm sure. Although I know she loves driving the stang! Thanks for the opinions about the 4.10's; I was one of those guys on the fence but I'm definitely going with the 4.10's.

It's pretty hard to find a taller tire, especially when you are taking about really sticky tires. Most of the time going down in overall diameter is necessary, further increasing the gear. All my racing tires (drag and auto x) are much shorter leading to ridiculous gearing. For instance my DRs have an overall diameter of 25.66" and my 285/30/18 R-comps are 24.67" (stock is 27"). This puts my effective gear ratio through the roof. If I had a blower and was capable of 115 mph traps, with my DRs on the car a shift to 5th would be necessary.

I think 3.73s are perfect if shorter tires are used for racing. All in all, I find 4.10s a major PITA for anything other than street driving.

Nitto makes a 555R in both 305/40 and 305/45. 18".

If you look at M&H and also Mickey Thompson's stuff you can find taller tires that are sticky. They are going to be pretty wide though. Figure at minimum a 10" rim.

Thanks to more gear threads, it's making me be back on the fence again. Son of a....

I do like the idea of a taller tire (like 295/45) which looks killer, but I figure if I get tires like that for the rear and I got 3.73 it would make them like 3.55 which is lame as hell. But at the same time I do a lot of 70+ mph highway and I don't want to be revving like a ****. The auto has a different ratio in O/D than the manual's 5th so the RPMs would be higher with the auto.

Damn it all!

so dont get the taller tire and put in 3.73's......or your next set of tires could be a little shorter (26.x tall) and that would make the gear effectively larger (in number) then 3.73....JMO

OP congrats on not fearing the gear!

4.10's are NOT THAT BAD on the highway lol!

I remember thinking what it would be like to hit 3500 rpm in 5th on the highway because I had 4.10's...NOT GONNA HAPPEN

I'm barely hitting 2750 at 80mph. 3000 at 90mph.

With a 28.5" tire out back I'm right at 2500rpm going 75mph in 5th. 3.9 final ratio after putting the new tires on. 4.10 FRPP.

Been two years since I switched out my 3.55's for the 4.10's.

No regrets.

Maybe not bad with a manual in 5th, but on an auto you'll be at 2700 at 70 mph in O/D.

That's a pretty big jump when I get between 2000 and 2100 at 70 mph with my 3.31.
