The other night I saw a mith buster episode about this, MPG AC on/off. A company they used did the study using some sort of program and concluded it was more efficient to run with the AC on. Then they got 2 equally equiped SUVs with the same payload. They where going to run them in an oval track at 55MPH with a full tank, but there was some issue with the race track insurance company that they had to use a manual pump to empty the gas tanks and add only 5 gallons and drive them around at 45MPH. The SUV with the AC on ran out of gas first. The other SUV with the AC off and windows down lasted another 45 laps.
