Well I'm glad you feel that ooomph now. I was starting to feel bad :x

My startup on a cold morning is roughly about 1000 rpm. Takes a lil for it to drop below.

The colder it is outside the longer the RPM's will hang around the 1k mark. If you still have the stock hose use the quick connects, if not get a hose clamp as stated earlier. Never rely on something just staying thier thats asking for trouble.

I just waits till it gets to at least 1k and if it doesn't drop below, I take off then.

On the startup idle, thats done to warm up the engine as quickly as possible to warm up the combustion chamber and prevent startup misfire or catastrophic detonation. Not a big deal. I usually wait a minute or so for the engine to warm up before I start driving it.
As far as the hose, if you think it could come off, then throw a hose clamp on it, and then you'll be set.
