Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for GM's North American rear-wheel-drive platform and owner of a first-generation Camaro convertible, was pleased to run through his baby's accomplishments.

According to Oppenheiser, the new 300-horsepower 3.6-liter V6-equipped Camaro will run from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds regardless of transmission choice. The V6 coupe will cover the quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds with an auto and 14.7 seconds with a manual, both at 97 mph. The brakes don't sound quite as impressive, though, as Oppenheiser said the base Camaro stops from 60 to zero mph in 132 feet.

Not surprisingly, the V8-equipped Camaro SS delivers better numbers across the board. Chevy's Camaro SS outfitted with the 422-hp 6.2-liter LS3 V8 six-speed manual hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and runs a 13.4-second quarter-mile at 108 mph according to Oppenheiser. Strangely enough, Oppenheiser also claims that the automatic-equipped SS Camaro, which is rated at 400 hp, runs from zero to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds. "We optimized the shift points," he said.

Both versions of the V8 Camaro SS pull a maximum 0.90 g on the skid pad. Four-piston Brembo brakes help stop the Camaro SS in 117 feet.

What this means to you: If Chevrolet's numbers pan out, the Camaro SS will be every bit as fast as the Dodge Challenger SRT8 for a lot less money. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor

the Camaro can not overcome Physics just because it's a Camaro !!!

FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY. CHEVY UNVEILS THE 2010 CHEVY CAMARO.

July 21, 2008

It's been one of the most talked about concept vehicles in automotive history. Now it's more than just a concept.

Today, at simultaneous events at the GM Tech Center in Warren, Michigan, and GM West Coast Advanced Design Studio North Hollywood, California, GM unveiled the 2010 Chevy Camaro. Sales begin in early 2009.

"The new Camaro delivers the best of both worlds – great heritage and a thoroughly modern, advanced package of performance, comfort and technology," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. "It's a sports car for a new generation of enthusiasts that doesn't forget the heritage that helped make the original a cultural icon."

And now, Camaro is returning to the streets. You'll be able to get the four-passenger, rear-wheel-drive performance Camaro Coupe in first quarter 2009 and the Camaro Convertible will follow within a year of the coupe.

A fast take on the facts

Built on the new GM global rear-drive platform, the Camaro is offered in V6-powered LS and LT models, as well as the V8-powered SS. All models and powertrain combinations include efficient six-speed transmissions.

"Camaro delivers all of the things that make Chevrolet such a revered, global brand," said Peper. "It is a car that competes with the best sports cars in its class, but does so with surprising efficiency. That is no small feat, and it took a worldwide commitment to achieve it."

The information provided below is current at time of publication. For even more product details, see the 2010 Chevy Camaro Spec Sheet and the Camaro Color Options.

Can't wait for all the V6 5th gens to start rolling around thinking they'll take down an S197 GT.

Overall, I think the car came out pretty much the way I expected. Looks like it'll have GTO type performance numbers...maybe a tad bit better. Still not optimistic about the pricing though. GM has its work cut out for it if they think they can price the LS3 competitively with the Mustang GT. But the premium price tag will be worth it for all the bells and whistles that it'll have over the Stang.

So, the Challenger is now a known quantity...and now the Camaro is a known quantity. Now its Ford's turn. And their return volley had better pack a punch. 400hp DOHC 5.0..........or go home Ford.

So even though our cars come with just 300hp stock, we arent hardly much slower than the 3900lb 400+ Camaro coming out. Gotta love our lighter weight S197's.

the auto also has a 400hp version called the L99 vs. the manual which has the 422hp LS3

so it is also less powerful
