I can't speak to any other oils, but I'm certain the Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil Ultra Wal-Mart sells is the same formulation they use elsewhere, going by Blackstone Oil analyses done on both my Mazdaspeed3 and other Mazdas with the same 2.3T DI engine.

Interesting, we haven't had RP in our local Wal Mart for a long time.

They are similar formulations. The difference is....

Ultra - 100% group III hydrocracked base stock (highly refined petroleum)

Platinum - Blend of group III and group IV (true synthetic) base stocks.

The additive package contained in both is more than likely similar.

So ultimatley platinum is better than the more expensive ultra?

Probably a better base stock blend for longevity, but Ultra is considered to be Pennzoil's best "cleaning" formulation. It's no myth that a pure group III base stock is better at suspending insoluble material in the base stock.

My point was simply, Ultra should not be priced higher than Platinum.

But it says ULTRA so it must be better than Platinum right? Well it may be.

You should look at an oil analyst and look at the NOACK, Viscosity Index, and other compounds.

Supposedly, the "new" Ultra formulation is derived from the latest GTL (Gas To Liquid) process, and has much better specs than the previous formulation. I still have my doubts about some of the specs and waiting for further testing.

i think it depends on the sale. Ive seen stuff a lot cheaper at the auto parts store but also at Kmart. It depends on what brand they have bulk stacked at the end of the aisle. Pray for your brand.

also does anyone bulk store oil from when its on sale?
