Default How can you tell if a Trans. Fluid is Synthetic?

My son has an old Ford Navigator (2001 I think???) getting ready for a trailer towing family trip across the country. I told him to put in the best trans. fluid.... hopefully synthetic. What's the best trans. fluid to put in an older trans. for the highest heat protection? I think some of the newer Ford compatible fluids are synthetic. Any suggestions?

Thanx in advance!

Automatic transmissions are fairly sensitive as to what's put in them, due to the different properties regarding friction modifiers contained in the fluid.

I'm not any sort of expert nor an engineer, so with that I would say the best recommendation would be to stick with whatever is spec'd for it. Which is probably a Mercon V fluid, and I have heard (dunno if true or not) it is considered to be a synthetic fluid.

You may want to do some digging around over at BITOG though, probably a bit more in depth and accurate info on this subject over there.

Thanx, I just want to get the best oil for an older transmission & synthetic if possible for extra heat protection. I'll have to look around! Ford doesn't make it easy & I don't want to trust a genius at an auto parts store!

You should find trans. fluid with the right ford specification. Doesn't matter semi-synthetic or fully synthetic

Trust the genius at your local Ford dealer and use what's recommended for your vehicle.
