Default Tire Blankets & Ground Insulators - Auto-x people will love them!

Tire Blankets & Tire Ground Insulators

More Heat = Faster Runs!

The MLS Motor Racing Tire Blanket is designed to keep your tires warm between runs. Their heavy weight and rear gusset keeps them from blowing away. There is no need to wedge something between your fender and this cover, or prop something heavy up against them. These covers will stay in place. The Tire Blanket's shape allows for quick and easy installation and removal while the tires are still on the car. All four blankets can be installed in about the same time it takes to check tire pressures. Because they are so easy to remove, you can leave the cover in place until the last possible minute so that your next run will be on the warmest tires possible.

Better Than Home Made Designs

The Tire Blankets provide insulation over the tread surface of the tire and over the front of the wheel. They provide more insulation than a hot water heater insulated wrap (1 inch of R14 fiberglass insulation) without the inconvenience of having to deal will all that itchy fiberglass.

No more do you have to re-make or repair mylar or fiberglass covers every year. The MLS Motor Racing Tire Blanks are durable. The external black material is the same material which can be found in high end backpacks. This type of material will survive many years of use and abuse. The external material also has a water resistant coating which not only provides moisture protection, but also acts as a wind barrier. Between the exterior layers is half inch of insulation. This insulation can be folded, crumpled or just wadded up, it will always return to its original shape so that it will continue to keep your tires warm over and over again. All the seams are protected by a strong binding and there are no zippers to fail or buckles to break which ensures that the covers will be usable for years to come.

Easy Transport & Storage

Then when you are all done for the day the Tire Blankets can be folded up and stored for easy transport. You can even wad them up in a ball and just shove them into any available space inside your car or truck or trailer, they can take it and will perform just as good as new. Try doing that with a fiberglass or those delicate mylar covers. You'll quickly learn that they just don't "spring back" into shape so their ability to insulate the tires will be greatly reduced because they need to have an air gap between their outside and inside surface in order to be affective.

What are Tire Insulators

During development of our Tire Blankets we learned that between runs not only do we loose heat from our tires to the air, the tires also loose heat to the cold hard concrete or asphalt. Since there is no way to completely wrap the entire tire with our Tire Blankets (without putting the car on jack stands) we had to find another way. We needed to find a material which met the following three criteria:

1. The material had to provide enough insulation so that tires would still be warm after 15 mins. on a 50° day
2. It needed to be durable, after all cars were going to drive over it.
3. It has to be cost effective. NASA Space Shuttle Tiles were a little too pricey.

We were able to meet all three of our design goals:

Our material actually reduces the rate of which heat is transferred from the tires to the concrete by over 95%. We tested the Tire Insulators on a 50° F day with tires that started out at 130°F. After 15 minutes the tire that was sitting on the Tire Insulators was 20°F warmer than the tire that was sitting on the concrete.

Our material is also very durable. Not only could it easily support the load of our Camaro, but could also handle repeated abuse from our 2.5 ton truck.

The price for 4 Tire Insulators is definitely within reach of the average autocrosser.

How Do Tire Insulators Work?

We've all touched cold metal and cold concrete with our bare hands or feet and we've felt how these materials just suck the heat right out of them. The same thing happens to our tires when we sit in grid. On the other hand we've all touched plastic door handles when we get into our cars on those cold days and yet, they don't seem as cold as the old metal ones. Why is that?

Well it due to the thermal resistance of the materials. Materials like metal and concrete have low thermal resistance. They are very good at absorbing the heat energy from the air and from the sun, or from our tires when we are sitting in grid. The MLS Motor Racing Tire Insulators slows the heat transfer from our tires to the concrete.

Other Material Results

Phenolic materials are commonly used as carburetor spacers to isolate the carburetor from the hot intake manifold. They are the material of choice for this job due to their very high melt temperatures. Because of this, Phenolics were the first materials we tested. We learned that these materials are very brittle. The first time we drove our Camaro onto a Phenolic plate, it just cracked in half. Second, we found that even though pehenolics have a very high melt temperature, there were materials with better insulating properties.

Why not just use wood? First off, our material provides better insulation than kiln dried wood, but as soon as this wood absorbs any moisture from the atmosphere, its thermal resistance decreases. Water does a really good job of absorbing heat, so next thing you know, you may just be accelerating the cooling process of your tires.

We tested over 25 different materials to arrive at our final choice. It meets all of our design goals which will insure that you will be very happy with its durability, its effectiveness and its price.

MLS Motor Racing Tire Insulators keeps the heat where it belongs, in the tires.
