Default Test Drive Questions

I am purchasing a '96 Mustang Saleen that has the factor equipped supercharger. The car is higher miles than I would have liked (100K), but the price is unbeatable for the shape the car is in.

My question is what do I look or listen for on the supercharger when I test drive?? Also, what is the life expectancy (average of course) on the engine and supercharger?? I know turbo's typically start to need rebuilding around the 100-120k mark, so I wondered about superchargers.

Also, any maintenance tips you guys could give me would be much appreciated.

Buying a supercharged car with 100k is risky business man.

It's easy for a SC'd or nitrous'd car to go alittle out of tune and have some serious internal damage waiting to fly through your oil pan. I'd say you rebuild the motor & have the SC inspected by someone experienced if you buy it.

I'd pass on this one.

yea, you'll be best to have it thoroughly checked out... for cylinder leakage, power balance.... get a carfax.... if the car was well cared for, then i think you'll be ok, as long as you continue to care for it. but be prepared, all cars break down. and as they get older, parts wear out. and not just engine parts, suspension...axles...brakes.... if you really want it, have it looked at, and if its in good shape, and you can accept the maintenance requirements...go for it. but if reliability is what you need....then pass it up.

BCisme, what kind of care are you talking about??? What kind of upkeep will I need to do on this thing?? The car is only going to be a weekend/toy car, so it will not be driven every day.

I have been hearing recently that superchargers are actually more reliable than turbo's?? Hopefully this is true.

buying any car with 100k can be risky...just look at seals, tire wear, any noises, check all door hinges,hood,truck..just go over it with a fine tooth comb so to speak..take your time..drive it with the a/c on and off then with all power acc. on..have someone follow you to look for smoke, track of car, and woobles as like a axle bearing..hope it helps
