I know of a couple of guys getting nearly 30mpg in their modified WRXs. One of them got his up to 165mph on a stretch of private road. Of course he keeps a laptop in his car to switch his tuning maps, so he wasn't getting nearly 30mpg when he tested his top end (and it was still pulling, he ran out of road). Convert to RWD and it'd go up from there.

And yeah, it's possible to convert a Subaru gearbox to RWD. I believe Cobb tuning converted one to use when they're testing stuff on the dyno (cheaper than buying the AWD dyno?). And the Cusco WRX race car is rwd.
I don't think it would be worth your time unless you got the engine, ecu, and wiring harness dirt cheap. Sounds like a major PITA.

1) Custom fabricating engine mounts
2) Converting WRX gearbox
3) Resizing driveshaft
4) Rewiring car

Too much work. I think it would be easier to stuff a Cosworth engine in.

It's a little 2.0 liter and if you keep out of the boost it sips fuel like a Honda.

My 2.5RS I've gotten between 28 and 14, depending on the abuse level.
I just got back from traffic court with my deferral so for the next year I need to avoid moving violations in order to keep the 81 in a 60 off my record. Today I'm going to hit the freeway for a 180 mile drive and see just how good I can get the mileage.

I don't ever expect to get near 30mpg in my mustang. I'd be extatic about 20. BTW, what's the fuel tank capacity of a '91 GT convertible? Anybody?

Try it just once, and you will understand why its not just an engine. Different makes do things much differently. To swap in another engine especially something that is a flat 4 into a stang, you will have alot of money wrapped up in it and wont drive it for a looooong time. The electronics alone will take a small fortune. If you need a small engine, go with the turbo 4. Otherwise just leave it as it is and enjoy the car.

You can do anything with a car, it just depends on how much money you have and are willing to spend on it. Try to put an Opel engine into a BMW or vice versa, its not gonna be pretty.

Opel?.....isnt this a Ford forum? I think your reasoning is sound anyway...BTW...I get 26 mpg in my 99 4.6 GT when traveling, and 20 or better to and from work...My 94 t-bird got 33 highway, and about 24 around town back in virginia. Most foreign guys are not in tune with the ways of the west when it comes to real horsepower and speed...and if they want to be, they have to buy a ferrari or some exotic. In this country 500+ hp cars are not at all uncomon, and cars that are capeaple of 200 mph are a dime a dozen. lightly modofied vettes, vipers, and 03 cobras are capeable of running easily up to the duce mark. In my world, its not if your car goes 150, but how fast it gets there and how long it can run there.

I would be careful in saying foreign guys aren't in tune with making real horsepower. I have a friend with a Merkur XR4TI with a Cosworth turbo 4 from England. It will put most domestics on the trailer at the track. I'm not a 4 cylinder fan but I do respect horsepower regardless. MYSTERIOUS said it right, it's all about the money. Anything can go fast with enough cash. Domestic or foreign.

everyone knows hp costs money and im pretty tired of hearing that...and im also tired of hearing this but it needs to be said...V-8's and domestics just take less of itto make hp. imports just take a lot more...accept it.

jeep is right. no matter what you do to a 4 banger, it will never have the raw low end power and feel of a V8. no other engine sounds or feels like a V8. i gaurantee you that 90% of all people who say differently, have never driven a V8 RWD car. i've driven many 4 bangers, many 6ers....but nothing makes my blood boil like good old american muscle!!!!
