Default Battery Explosion

I went to back my Saleen out of the garage on Sunday. When I turned the key, I heard an explosion and a clunk from under the hood. That was followed by what looked like a cloud of gas. Turns out my battery exploded! More speficially, hydrogen gas. It knocked one of my battery caps off and split the battery all along the front top and side. I had water and acid leaking out the bottom of my car.

I hosed evrything down and AAA came out and changed the battery. Luckily there was no other damage to car!

Remember to check your water levels. These batteries are not maintenance free!

Was this the original battery? I would contact both Ford and the Manufacturer, its fine for batteries to go dead, but not fine for them to go "boom"!

I'd be a little concerned about residual acids hiding somewhere only to get unknowingly activated by water.

On an old car I had, I got a little splattered in the hood insulator and over time it caused some cosmetic issues.

A baking soda and water wash might be a good idea, followed with a car wash. Just don't short the poles or anything, and perhaps some solution in a sprayer is all you need.

WOW! I would have been pissed. Good to hear there wasn't any further damage.

At the battery shop I go to they say that they get batteries that explode on them all the time. I heard a bang in the back the other day when I was there. He said that was a battery exploding. I guess it is more common than people realize.

Like the others said make sure you clean it up really well. I would even go as far as removing as much as you can in that area and pressure washing it if you can just to be sure you got it all out.

Use some Apple Cider Vinegar, or some kind of Vinegar to wash down the area where the acid was. That should help nuetralize some of the acid.
