Cool Hoping for 12's tonight

So, hitting Famoso tonight. It's gonna be freakin HOT though, it's supposed to be high in the 90's or so today(might even hit 100, we have a heat advisory in effect for the weekend, with highs upwards of 110 by Sunday), and even by 8-9pm it doesn't cool down much. I figure by midnight it might be low 70's at best. Humidity out there in the farm land is usually around 35%, so the DA is gonna be like 2,000-2,500ft.

But as far as running, this will be the first time I'm running on fresh street tires, all the other times the tread was more than 50% worn and traction was limited. Also now that I have a mech 2nd rather than vacuum 2nd carb I have total throttle control, which should help peddling it outta the hole somewhat. The setup is basically the same, except I'm running a larger dual plane(RPM Air Gap) now rather than the low rise dual plane I had before. And I also now have a 650 mech 2nd carb with annular booster and 3 circuit metering, rather than my vacuum 570 Holley with a weaker metering circuit. I'm hoping to squeeze around 110mph out of it.

If I can get my 60's into the 2.0-2.1 range and pull 110mph it should go mid 12's based on how the car runs and reacts to 60's. I've found with my setup any change in the 60' tends to be a tad more than doubled as far as ET. Even at 107mph if I could get 2.0's it should run 12.70's.

Wish me luck....or skill, I'll take either.

Oh well, it didn't happen. Only mustered 13.25 at 106.7mph with a 2.19 60'. It was an absolute zoo though, I only got 2 passes and then went home at like 140am. There were like 600 cars trying to run, and people kept puking crap all over the track. One dude in an EVO blew the tranny outta the hole, and then out of courtesy decided to coast ALLLLLL the way down the track, leaving a snail trail of trans fluid the whole freakin way. Ran a whopping 46.something at 3mph....and it took like 2 hours for them to clean it all up!!

The best pass I listed was the first run, which was rich, so I managed to make a jet change to lean it out. The mph didn't change though, but the car was a lot more responsive, and the 2nd pass was 13.46 but the 60' was a pathetic 2.36. It was still running rich, but by then I was tired and didn't feel like hanging around any more. Both passes I lit the tires up going into 2nd, which is never did before with the smaller intake and carb, even on nearly bald tires.

Suspension is still killing me, something better would help, and I'm only running a 225 wide street tire. I just want to get my tune sorted first, and it's freakin hard when you can't get enough passes close enough together to make meaningful changes. My 2 passes were like 3 hours apart....so the weather had changed, the engine and oil were way cooler etc.

Oh well, not bad for a mild n/a daily driver 302 I guess. At least I get like 23+mpg on the highway running rich...my constellation prize.

Oh well. Your gonna have those kinda days. I decided not to shoot for a time this year and when I finally do get to the strip I'm just running for fun this year. I was driving my self crazy last year trying to out do my personal best on every run.

ahh, that sucks man. Sounds like a tire would help a ton on your car.

Why not try to get into a rental day when you could make 20+ passes to sort the car out? I usually run rentals and its so much more relaxed (yes expensive too)

67, why dont you throw a set of decent tires on extra rims to see what the car is really capable of? you must be making good power to get those traps, but youre losing everything at the line. your traps are similar to mine, but i was getting out quite a bit harder...

what trans and gear are you running? good call on the airgap..ive been really happy with mine.

I've thought about running a tire, but it's still got the 8" rear end in it with some money invested. It'd probably hold fine if I ran an ET street and didn't launch like a tard, but it's my driver and I don't wanna risk breaking it. The 8" is a lot stronger than most people give it credit for and there are stronger aftermarket axles available for it, I just don't have the spare cash floating around to wanna take that chance, so for now I'll deal with street tires. It needs new suspension too, if I could get that replaced and at least get some wider tires under it, it'd go a long way.

The trans is a TKO 600 and it's got a 3.55 gear. My first pass I launched at like 2,200 and eased out of the clutch and feathered the gas, I was prolly 40' out before I was off the clutch and then just rolled into the gas. The second pass I eased out of the clutch a little faster, but it surprised me, the jet change made it a lot more responsive and it lit the tires hard as I rolled into the throttle. By then I was so aggravated after having waited like 3 hours I really didn't care any more.

Hopefully the next test session will be better, and I'll have a chance to get it sorted some more. At least I know I was running too rich still.

Exactly...
I used to think 40~45 bucks for a rental was expensive until I pissed away 60 bucks at 3 T&T nights and had 6 passes total.

20+ passes is a steal for 40~45 bucks.

I don't think they're even doing rentals these days unless you can get a certain number of cars to show up, which seems nearly impossible to do around here for some reason. The track is running events pretty much every weekend too.
