Default Convertible Top Care

I have seen a lot of worn out looking vert tops on old mustangs. Ford has said that this is a completely redesigned top for the 2015's and I do not need to worry about it. However, I do not believe them haha. I am seeing what products you all use to keep your tops looking fresh. I live in Florida so the sun is a cars worst nightmare. I have read that 303 and ragtop make great products. Is this safe to use and has anyone had any experience with any of those or other products. I just want to keep it looking fresh and black.

Great question & I would love to see an answer. . I did not see anything in the owners manual on this, but I may have missed it. Right now I am just using plain water and then patting it dry - not rubbing it - with a towel. Trying to prevent wear & tear of the top and having cotton fibers from the towel all over the top. So far so good. Might want to get a black towel....

I just got my 2012 rag in feb. A few weeks ago I cleaned it with the 303 cleaner. The next day I put on the 303 sealer. Before doing these treatments water would soak in when I washed it. Now the water beads. The top looks great. I did a lot of research before going with the 303. Im very happy with the results.

another tip

A lint brush works well on a cloth top.

Any difference in the maintenance required for the newer cloth style roofs versus the older ones(such as my 04) which have more of a vinyl look? Thanks.
My 04 still looks good, however the car was garaged most of it's life, and now sits out.

I bought a 2012 Vert in February. I did a lot of research and called Haartz, who manufactures 90% of convertible tops. They recommended the Ragg Top cleaner, and the Ragg Top Protectorant.

I cleaned and waxed the car today, but I didn't do the top, because I can't tell if it is vinyl or cloth. My window sticker says vinyl, but when I did the water test that Autopia shows, the water doesn't bead. I took a picture and emailed it to Wolfsteins, who manufactures Ragg Topp. I hope to hear from them, or I will just have my wife (her car) stop at the Ford dealer and let her know if it is cloth or vinyl.

Is it obvious if it is vinyl? Or do the vinyl and the cloth look similar?

This is how it looked after dripping some water on.

This is how the top looked before I washed the car. It came out pretty clean, just by running water over it, without using any soap on it.

Judging from the first picture, I'd say you have a vinyl top.

I think you are right. I saw a Mustang with a cloth top, and mine is not woven, like that. Thanks.

Default Vinyl for sure

Yep, that's a vinyl top. I had the same top on my 2000 V6 and my 2012 V6 Verts. They were pretty impervious to almost anything...but the sun. Mine were garaged, so even the 2000 looked great when I sold it in 2011.

Starting in 2012, you could not get a cloth top on anything by the GT. I had the vinyl on my V6 until I shattered out the back window putting the top down with a sweatshirt in the top well. Bummer.

When I had the local upholstery shop replace the top (you have to replace the entire top, less frame and padding, to replace the rear glass, I paid an extra 200.00 to have the cloth/GT style top put on instead of the vinyl. He told me after the install that the best way to care for it was to make sure NO treatment, soap or otherwise, ever touched it. Water only he said. I kept to that and 2 years later when I sold that car to order my 2015 GT Vert, top still looked new.

I will 2nd the motion that a good lint brush works great to get the fuzz, dust and dirt off the top between washes.
