Default 2015 mustang gt vs 1971 mustang 429 cj

Will a stock 2015 mustang gt run with the old 1971 mustang 429 cj with 375 hp?

Wasn't the 0-60 on the 1971 Cobra Jet like 6 seconds with the 1/4 mile at around 14.5 seconds?
The 2011-2016 GTs (5.0 Coyote engine) run 0-60 in ~4.4 seconds with a 1/4 mile time of ~12.8 seconds, stock.

You have to take into consideration the 1971 Cobra Jet had **** stock tires back then they had to use on 1/4 mile runs for the magazine articles.

I'd bet with slicks the time would jump way up.

2011-2016 Coyote engine Mustangs would likely still be faster though. Even with slicks vs garbage tires I can't imagine the 1/4 mile time dropping 1.8 seconds without modifications... Plus, we'd also have to put a Coyote on slicks to be fair.

Absolutely. The Coyote engine is truly an amazing thing for Mustang lovers, IMO. I'm one of the ones who loved the old 4.6 V8 due to how it sounded with a proper 2.5" catback exhaust (I went Magnaflow on my '01 GT Convertible); just had a wonderful deep chest-vibrating bassy sound with an aftermarket exhaust. But the Coyote is just a versatile monster that gets pretty crazy mpg considering it's power (it gets better than my '01 GT which had a tune, exhaust and CAI ).

This would amount to a match up between a Sopwith Camel and an F18.

The engine in the 15 makes more power per CI than the 71
The suspension of the 15 puts the power to the ground better
The wheels on the 15 allow the power to be put down while the 71's skinny little bicycle tires will start spinning before anything exciting happens
The brakes on the 15 will stop the car like the hand of god reached out. The 71 requires more prayers.
We don't even need to consider real racing where you have to actual make the car turn. Even a pimple covered 15 year old could beat a pro-racer in the 71 on a road course. Even if we put slicks on the 71 but not the 15.

There is a reason older cars race in a different class than modern cars.

The 2005-2009 GTs at stock run the 1/4 in about 13.8 seconds and have a 5.1 second 0-60.
So, the GT still wins.

You'd likely have to go back to the new edge mustang GT from 1999-2004. IIRC their stock 1/4 was around 14.7 seconds or so and their 0-60 was 6 seconds, which are comparable to that of the '71 cobra jet.

another thing is that the 429 was rated in "SAE gross" horsepower which truly was a gross way of doing it. They could measure it on blueprinted engines with open headers, no air cleaner, no alternator or PS pump, etc. ever since 1972 engines are rated in SAE "net" horsepower, with all accessories, all intake ducts, full exhaust system, etc.

so that "375 hp" 429 probably actually made about 300 hp, if that.
