synthetic is not that much more expensive. i think it is quakerstate has a sale this month like 4.99 a qt for their synthetic.
i run mobil 1 5w-20 and i pick it up at the wal-mart for like 22 bucks for a 5qt jug. and then just pick up a long life oil filter and you wont have to change your oil for 5-7 thousand miles. i feel like the extra engine protection is worth the 5 or 6 bucks extra.
mobil one also offers there "clean 5000" oil which is NON-synthetic and is not a synthetic bled. it is simple conventional oil which is good for 5000 miles.

I run Motorcraft 5w20 and a motorcraft filter, it cost me less than $15 for an oil change. When I pulled my heads at 118k miles the honing marks in the cylinders looked brand new. I was also able to clean my heads with a paper towel, no sludge buildup or anything

My car has had Motorcraft oil and filter its whole life, but I switched to Royal Purple with a Motorcraft filter just for kicks and giggles, but I still change it at 5k miles.
I would think 10-40 its kinda thick, but if that's what you have been using...?
