Default gas leak at gas tank

I topped of the other day and noticed a puddle of fuel. Do the cars normally leak at the filler tube? I tried a search but really didnt find anything. Thaks for all the help

Depends on the situation. Could be at the neck, could be a seam in the tank itself leaking, could be the line/filter.

I'd climb under the car and look for the wet spot on the tank... see where it's coming from.

More than likely the grommet/seal for the filler tube has corroded. you will need to replace it if it has.

Mine was the seal between the neck and the tank, dropping the tank was a bit of a pain but it only took about half an hour and it hasn't leaked a drop since.

Ya the seal. had to replace mine the day I got the car. Cost me $75 to buy it and have it installed. great deal since I had no way to drop the tank.

It's best to check it out before inspection time, if you have a rotted filler or bad seal its going to blow a code at sticker time. Rotted fill tubes are very common now although not so much in Mustangs. It's more common with cars like Neons or Buick Regals where the fill is located behind the wheel and alot of water and road salt kick up on it causing corrosion. Its easy enough to get a replacement fill tube, if not OE, you can get them off a supplier who deals in used fillers off of southern vehicles. My guess though is the seal.

The guy that replaced mine blamed it on Ethenol. I hate that stuff. I try to buy 100% gas but it's difficult to find these days.
