Power steering fluid

Power steering fluid
When I first bought my 2002 vert a couple years ago I got regular ps fluid. I called the dealer service dept and they said it was ok to use. Where they right or should I have used something else?

from your owners manual: "Check the power steering fluid. Refer to the scheduled maintenance guide for the service interval schedules. If adding fluid is necessary, use only MERCON ATF."
3.8L engines fluid is checked with engine warm. 4.6L with engine at ambient temp.
