Default Leaky transmission

I have a 2000 Mustang that is leaking tranny fluid faster than I can pour it in. Any ideas from where it is leaking. I am a novice when it comes to cars but I can do some repairs/ maint.

Thanks.

usually tranny would leak from the seals, near the drive shaft.
another common leak is the lines. tranny lines to the radiator. (automatics)

did you take a look under? its not too difficult to narrow it down to a compartment, then you can narrow it down some more.

take a look and come back to us. good luck.

Thanks Dr Le for your response. We took it to an oil change place to get a look under the car. On our way it was knocking like a diesel. When we got there, it spurted and died. We have since towed it to a mechanic.

A few weeks ago we started it in the drive way to let it run and charge the battery. When we closed the door it locked with the only set of keys inside. I called a locksmith but he took forever to arrive. After a while, it started stalling and smoking from the engine area. I finally broke a window and turned it off after about 45 minutes. For some reason the fan never kicked on but I now know it comes on with the AC. But doesn't seem to otherwise.

I now fear the worst. Any ideas? Is the engine ruined?

Thanks again.

Ok. We replaced the freeze plug but now have two other leaks. See picture. One is in the middle of the pic and the other is from the round rubber/plastic piece on the left of the pic. Just behind the first leak.

Any ideas on how to repair these?

Much thanks to anyone that can advise.

I cannot really tell from your pic. But from what i can see, it looks like you have broken the belhousing on the tranny.

If there is transmission fluid coming out of the bell housing, you will need to pull the transmission to find out what is going on. Could be a bad seal.

Thanks for all the responses.

We took it to a mechanic who said there are 2 freeze plugs at the back of the engine between it and the tranny. He is going to pull the engine, replace all plugs and seals for 750. Does that sound legit?

Thanks again.

Freeze plugs cause radiator and or engine oil to leak. That does not appear to be what's leaking, unless you just changed the engine oil then maybe, otherwise it would be green or blackish. It looks like the front seal of the transmission itself at the belhousing or input shaft is leaking.
