Default "hesitation" when taking foot off the gas in an automatic

I just got this car, so I don't really know if this is normal.

When I'm going about 30 mph, if I let off the gas completely, the automatic transmission seems like it has a problem downshifting. It's not a jerk or anything, but it just feels like it is slowing down faster than it should be (to me it seems that it should slow down as if I were driving a stick shift and I pushed the clutch in).

Sometimes when this is happening it seems that it downshifts and then coasts along smoothly at the proper speed.

Do you know what the problem might be?

So many more people are smarter than me about cars, so they might be able to help you better. But I will say my auto does somewhat the same thing. If you have it in overdrive mode, its shifts are really dimwitted (using a Jeremy Clarkson term), as in is terrible at knowing the right moment to down shift. My suggestion (others will prob say something else and they def know more than me) is to turn overdrive off and see how the tranny does. Usually things for me are smoother when I do that

Turning over drive off basically turns your trans into a 3 speed. You will get terrible gas mileage.

^ Yes exactly what babyGT said. I think i get like 16 at best when overdrive is off, but I have never tried turning it off for a full tank. I like to keep my money thank you lol. But maybe just try turning it off and see if that fixes the issue your having. Just dont drive with it on all the time lol

Ideally I'd like to know why this is happening and if it is something I can fix myself.

I adjusted the shift cable (7B-3 in the Haynes manual) and the problem has greatly diminished.
