Default Diesel turbo on 98 3.8L pony

Hi first time posting here. I got a 90s (im not sure the year) ram 3500 cummins 24v turbo diesel im thinking its a 3.9L? I was wondering if i can install it on my 3.8 pony to get a little more out of it. Or will it affect it negatively? Im still a noob with turbos and thought this was the best place to ask. It has dual exhaust 1 cat on each side and two fm 40s and a bbk throttle body those are my only mods. Anything is help thanks in advance.

You can mount any turbo to any engine. It all depends on how much time and money you are willing to put into fabricating the piping to make it work.

that turbo is for an engine that creates more exhaust volume than a v6 gas engine. it will work for chit, and have lag as big as the day is long. dont cobble together crap and expect it to work. harsh i know, but reality isnt kind.

Not to be ignorant but how will it lag? Can i do anything to the car to release more emissions to activate the turbo? A Cam?

lag is when the trubo takes a period of time to spool up and make boost.
you can start by getting a trubo that is the correct size for what you are trying to do

Or get a smaller turbo that your engine can spoil quickly and use it to spoil the one you have

I didn't know turbo's had a shelf life, spoil? You mean spool? He could do a sequential Turbo setup (smaller turbo for low RPM and bigger turbo for higher RPM) but the costs to get it done right far outweigh the savings because of the custom fabrication he'll have to do (and additional parts he'll need) to make it all work.

Yeah, I meant spool, damn autocorrect.

And any f/I setup for the 3.8 is gonna have to be custom and expensive. There just isn't a lot of options for these motors.
