Check Engine Light

Check Engine Light
I just recently bought a 2006 ford mustang V6 60,000 miles on it from a dealership. I was driving home from work last night and the check engine light went on. I did read that the gas cap could be the cause, so I went to check it and that was not the cause. What are other reasons could cause the CEL to go on? and should I be concerned that this is going to cost me an arm and a leg(figuratively speaking). and also the brakes started to squeak it comes and goes but I have noticed it getting louder. Is there anything that I can do to make it stop?

your brake pads are probably worn and need replacement or could have something stuck in between the disc and pad. best bet would be to get the car scanned to solve the cel either at the dealership or aamco believe does free check engine light scanning.

Welcome to the forums.
Take that car right back and let them know right away what is going on.
Here in California there are laws that protect used car buyers.
Sears will scan the codes for you for free and wont make you buy a hand held reader.

It's not a lemon if the brakes are worn out, it is a used car, the light could be from your pads needing to be replaced. Most local autopart stores will do free code scans, what kinda warranty did the car come with?

If they sold you a car that needed brake pads then run as fast as you can away from that dealership.
No dealership takes in a trade in/sells a used car without first inspecting the damn thing.

You have obviously never been to any small dealerships lol maybe the big dealers don't but mom and pop dealers buy and sell cars as is to flip for money.
That's why they always clearly have as-is warranty stickers on them.
If he got it from a smaller dealer like that then its basically on the buyer to check over the car.

LOL at some of the suggestions/comments
There are TONS of things that could cause the CEL to come on. Take it back to the dealership you got it from and they should take care of it for you. However, make sure you get in writing what the code found was so you have it for your records. You do not want them to simply turn it off without fixing the problem (if there is one). Perhaps that's what they did in the first place? ANd yes CA has laws that protect you from mom and pop shops. They cannot sell you a car with a known problem without disclosing it. If they failed to disclose it they are on the hook for misrepersentation or fraud.
As for the squeaky brakes. Again, it can be a number of things. One thing I found is that Ford brake pads (not the OEM factory ones but Motorcraft) are shi t. I usually upgrade to Ceramic pads after the OEM factory ones wear out. For some reason the Motorcraft always squeal. They are semimetallic. SO, the pads could be new. You won't know unless you look at them yoruself or have someone who knows about cars look for you.
If they are new and squeaky, the best way to get rid of that squeal (and not have it come back) is have the pads replaced with ceramic ones. They are a little more expensive than the Semi-metallics but you will not have to pull them out again until they need replacing from wearing out.
