Default The Official S197 V6 Exhaust Thread

Ok first off I would like to thank AmericanMuscle4.6GT who set up "The Official S197 exhaust thread" https://mustangforums.com/m_3563477/tm.htm But his tread catered more to the S197 GT and not as much to the 4.0 who we all know have a different sound the the GT's.

This is just a very basic set up for now and it can always be changed when new videos become available. I am open to any ideas you guys have and would like any input as well.

There are 3 main parts to our exhaust system when considering replacement. Headers, midpipe, and axle back/catback. The headers channel and collect the exhaust as it comes out of the exhaust ports, the midpipe controls the scavenging effect (see other sticky), and the catback/axle back usually contains the mufflers, which attenuate engine noise. -AmericanMuscle4.6GT

There are 2 basic types of muffler: Chambered and flow through (also referred to as bullet, resonator, etc). They will both enhance the sound of your car when paired with an otherwise stock setup, however, it is important when replacing the midpipe/headers to choose a combo that will sound nice. - AmericanMuscle4.6GT

k, so i've been listening to clips for about 30 min now...and the GT takeoff is starting to grow on me...is it actually louder than just a stock muffler, while keeping the somewhat deep tone of stock? basically, i like my stock mufflers tone, just want it louder without popping, high pitched noise, etc.
thanks

pretty much. It sounds MUCH better than stock, but it's not going to wake anyone up. It's actually much deeper than stock. Shouldn't have any issues with popping, either.

k, so another question...i've heard a rumor that there are 2 types of stock GT mufflers - one for the MT and one for the AT with different part numbers and one is supposed to be better than the other...is this true?

There is a difference between the stock GT mufflers. I have heard both side by side and the manual mufflers have a deeper tone. Either sounds better than the stock V6 muffler.

I asked this question in another thread but I guess it got overlooked.
When I purchased my '08 I wanted duals, requested the FRPP but as the dealer regularly upgrades and modifys GT's they talked me into the GT exhaust at a savings and I am pretty much satisfied. After looking under the car I noticed there is no cross-over X or H. The car sounds great at start-up and driving, however, after it is warmed up at idle it kind of bubbles or puffs. My question is would an X or H pipe solve this and which is better for performance?

Great thread you've got here. And sorry I can't answer your question Albion47, but I actually have a question that somewhat goes a long with it also for those of you with the H pipe set up. Did you buy an H pipe kit or just have it fabricated? I ask cause I'm considering buying the JBA H pipe setup and doing the install myself, but every set up I've heard with a custom H pipe sounds so wicked. And also if you did get one made, how much would that usually run (money-wise that is)?

and to landon.moss, i would highly recommend the GT takeoff. I installed mine the a couple months ago and i love it. definitely feel it pulling harder and sounds great. and plus i got it for 50 bucks shipped, can't beat that price for a pair of mufflers. Planning on using them when i go duals too

Cost me about $70 to go put in an H pipe from straight pipes

you shouldn't be dissapointed with the JBA setup. i love it. its got a great muscle tone at idle and a nice healthy roar when reving without excessive loudness. it feels very appropriate for our 4.0's and it definitely turns heads when i drive by. [8D]
