Default Manually Shifting the Automatic-How Much is ok?

Got the Auto V-6, which I find a little sluggish at low speeds. I have tried turning off the OD and shifting Manually gets me better power especially in the 20-40 mile per hour range. I do not downshift again till I get to a low speed or stop. Will that damage the tranny, or can I feel free to shift away?

I haven't tried to manually shift my V6-auto, but from what you have said, I would think you will be OK. When putting a load on the 05's, the tranny has a tendency to hunt for the right gear. The "drive-by-wire" (search here for that term) design of the gas pedal will also make it feel sluggish. They have a built-in rev limiter, so you can't over-rev if you downshift too soon or too far for the given speed. Plus, you're still under warranty! [sm=lol.gif]

Get the XCal (or XCal 2) and a tune... (maybe even consider a custom tune)

The shifting can be made MUCH MUCH better...

True! Those shifts can really be firmed up with a tuner.

However for the time being.....don;t sweat it. The computer won't let the trans shift into a gear that is too low and could damage your engine.

Try it. Down shift it into first - or second - whatever the hell the lowest gear is on your shifter LOL. Nothing will happen until the computer decides it is safe to down shift. It will still hit high RPM but there is not really any danger to your car. Drive it like you stole it LOL.

I can vouce for the idiot proof transmission. I read online that it wouldn't let you shift into a lower gear at too high a speed so I tried it. At 70MPH I shifted it into first and nothing happened (thankfully).
I also have an SCT tune & it can definitely firm up those shifts. The SCT is highly recommended.

Nice Ragtop!
I am going to shift away!
Primarily I have been upshifting from a stop starting in 1st and going on through the gears till I get till about 50 or so then hit drive. I will try downshifting more and see how much fun that is.
Can't wait.

OK, Here is mine with the top down...

OK, I Guess I know what I am doing this weekend!

By a tune, I am not sure what you mean. If I take it to a dealer and ask for a "tune, "
exactly what are they going to do?
The X-Cal, is that a modification to the transmission?

I am going to learn a lot on this site. Thanks StupidTodd and Mike!

how do you manually shift in an auto?
1...2...3...D (with overdrive off)...D (with overdrive on)

There's all five gear choices right there.

I've put mine in 3rd from about 90mph for some quick deceleration (curves come quick!) with no ill efffects. If the rpm's are too high, I don't think it will downshift.

i recomend learning your shift points, for example in my 04 v6 at 55 its the top of the 2nd gear so if i am on a roll i like to down shift into 2nd at 55 and just rev there till i am ready to go. Also go to www.fordchip.com they are amazing at tuning. I got a chip from them and it squaks my first to second shift.

also i dont recomend shifting the automatic in general unless you do it at the right speeds. It SHOULD lock you out of shifting at the wrong speeds but mine didnt once when i was messing around i accidently got into 2nd at 80 and yea hit the rev limiter and didnt sound too good, but its built ford tough right lol. and yea hasnt broke.
