Default v6 Drive Shaft Incident

Last December I got my first Mustang, a 2012 v6. I got the base model because I wanted a project car that I could play with. About two months ago I had a supercharger put on it. After having some issues with the tune it came with I decided the best thing to do was to get a dyno tune.

I dropped the car off at a tuning shop on the weekend and expected to get it back the middle of the week. I didn't even think about the fact that to do a proper dyno tune with a supercharger they might have to bring the speed up above 100 mph (something I wouldn't do with normal driving).

I've heard about the drive shaft in the v6 not being able to take a lot of stress but everything I've seen had it failing over 130 mph. Being that this is a street car I'll never get to that speed so I had decided to stick with the stock part. This ended up being a very bad idea.

I got a call a few days later expecting to be told it was ready. Instead I was informed that I needed a new drive shaft. The bottom of the car got beat up a bit and I'll be getting the exhaust fixed next week. This turned out to be a not very fun lesson... All I can say is you learn from your mistakes.

Anyway here are some pictures of the drive shaft.

Impressive! Did the shop happen to mention what speed or RPM it was that she ripped loose?

Sorry to hear but when I do finally add boost, the driveshaft will be upgraded first.

Its not only the speed that factors in, but the power.

The added stress of the supercharger would definetly cause that.

Yikes! I just replaced the stock shaft with a Shaftmasters 4" aluminum unit. I was lucky with mine, it survived a supercharger on the dyno several times, but I'm glad I changed it as it's a lot smoother now with no slop or play.
Good luck on your's, mabye you can get it warranteed. Although you aren't going to put a stock unit back in it I assume.

Yeah. They already fixed it to get it drivable. I have it back now. The exhaust still needs some work but that will I'll have taken care of later this week.
