Not entirely true.
The optimal length of the antenna has to do with the frequency you are trying to capture. FM frequencies of 88.1 to 107.79 IIRC are about 32". AM reception is best served with a length of 54" IIRC. That's why most antennas have the whip, then a wire that is curled up the post. the whip part is for FM the wound or curled part is for AM.
Optimal placement of the antenna to get the best reception varies depending on distance from source, obstacles, and other interferences.

a 20 foot tall antenna would not be practical for vehicles and not all radio wavelengths need someone that long.

I would be that most people rarely listen to their radio anyway.

Other issues I anticipate are these possibilities:
Water pump
Thermostat housing
Possible transmission issues, which we will learn more about when the motor comes out of the car.

Since they already have to pull the engine you have half the work done already. I still think you will be money ahead just having them put a used one in. Rebuilding the 4.0 isn't worth it when you price out the $1,000 for a used one compared to what it will cost for them to tear this one down, get the parts, and rebuild it.
Have you checked your area on car-part.com for an engine?

OP, replace that mill...
JimC is right.
You're being charged for removing this one already so why being cheap at this point?
Also, the aftermarket aluminum thermostat housing is a nice and permanent upgrade for $140 or so.

No matter how good of a used engine you'll find, the OEM plastic housing is simply junk therefore, you're looking at a short term need of replacement...
