This article applies to the Ford Mustang GT (1996-2004).

So the horn died in your Mustang GT, and you're wondering what your options are? Well, you could take it to a mechanic and pay through the nose for parts and labor, or you could replace it yourself. Getting to it is the most challenging part, but it can be done, saving you a bundle in the process. Here is how to do it step-by-step.

Materials Needed

  • Flat and Phillips head screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • 11mm socket
  • 8mm socket
  • Replacement horn

Step 1 – Locate the horn

The horn is located inside the driver's side fender, between the left headlight and the wheel well (as shown in Figure 1).

Step 2 – Remove the driver's side headlight

In order to get to the horn, you will need to remove the fender. The first step is to remove the headlight, as shown in Figure 2. Pull up on the pins, slide the headlight out, and unplug the two wire connectors.

Step 3 – Remove the fender

Start by removing the two front 8mm bolts, which is shown in Figure 3.

You will then need to remove all the remaining bolts (Figure 4). It would be best to jack up the car, so put it on jack stands and remove the left front wheel. That will allow you access to all the bolts and screws needed to remove the fender.

Once all the bolts have been removed, carefully pull the fender up and then out away from the vehicle. Be wary of any moldings or trim pieces that may need to be popped out prior to removal.

Step 4 – Replace the horn

The dual horn assembly is fastened to the frame with one bolt, as shown in Figure 5. Remove the existing wire connector and then unbolt the broken horn assembly. Replace it with the new one and plug in the wire connector.

Step 5 – Reinstall the fender and headlight

Be sure to test the replacement horn before putting everything back together. Once it all looks good, bolt the fender, headlight as well as wheel back in place and you're done.
