2024 Ford Mustang GT Keeps Tradition Alive by Joining NC State Highway Patrol Fleet
NCSHP has added 25 2024 Ford Mustang GT coupes to its fleet as a nod to the old Special Service Package cars.
With 2024 marking 60 years since the Ford Mustang originally made its public debut, The Blue Oval has plenty of celebrations lined up to mark that milestone – everything ranging from a traveling road show to special events to retro gauge clusters for 2024 model year owners and a forthcoming 60th anniversary special edition model. However, there’s another nifty piece of pony car history that most of us are well aware of – the Mustang Special Service Package (SSP) of the Fox Body generation, which quickly rose to fame in the world of law enforcement. Now, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol is keeping that tradition alive after adding 25 2024 Ford Mustang GT coupes to its fleet as well.
The good news for those that tend to have a heavy right foot is that these two dozen-plus 2024 Ford Mustang GT couples will at least be marked, so you’ll certainly see them out on the interstates of North Carolina. Of course, that doesn’t mean they won’t be out there hiding behind trees or billboards, however, just looking out for the next super speeder in an attempt to keep those roadways safe.

In any event, the 2024 Ford Mustang GT makes for one fine highway patrol vehicle, given the performance offered up by its 5.0-liter V8, much like its predecessor. Though Ford discontinued the SSP when the Fox Body went away following the 1993 model year, that hasn’t stopped law enforcement agencies from acquiring pony cars and using them for the same purpose in the years since, but few have marked that occasion with an elaborate announcement like NCSHP.
Regardless, the agency is also quick to note that this move was made at least in part to honor tradition, and also added that purchasing these vehicles didn’t exactly cost taxpayers extra money, either – in fact, NCSHP notes that the cost of these 2024 Ford Mustang GT models was comparable with other police vehicles that are already part of its fleet. Regardless, compared to something like, say, the Explorer-based Police Interceptor Utility or F-150 Police Responder, these new pony-based cop cars offer up quite a bit more in the way of performance.
