In Honor of the New Mustang GT3, We Look Back at 5 Historic Racing Mustangs
3. 1985 Mustang IMSA GTO
Ford partnered with Jack Roush to custom-build racecars in the early 1980s. Did it work? Well, in 1985 one of these cars won the 24 hours of Daytona and was the IMSA GTO champion that year. For good measure, the Mustang IMSA car won the championship in 1986 as well. They may look like rolling bricks but the 550 horsepower cars could hit 190 mph and were nimble enough on a road course to keep competitors in the rearview mirror.
