Good news for ‘96-’17 Mustang owners: industry-leading clutch and flywheel manufacturer Centerforce has you covered!

Centerforce Clutch has announced a pair of new aluminum flywheels for 1996-2017 Mustangs, directly replacing the stock units. In a press release, Centerforce states their flywheels “are lighter than stock, delivering performance during spirited driving sessions but maintaining usability for daily drivers.” This latest addition complements their venerable Dual-Friction and DFX clutch kits already available, along with a variety of steel flywheel offerings.

Centerforce offers the flywheel in both 6 and 8-bolt crank styles. Both flywheels’ specifications mirror one another, with the most impressive figure being weight – just 12.65 pounds. Both are precision dynamic balanced and are dual-drilled for either 10.4 or 11-inch clutch plates for a wide adaptability range. And, like all their other products, Centerforce designed the flywheel using CAD and CNC machining for what they state is “a precise, no-hassle, bolt-in installation and SFI-certified for driver confidence on and off the track.” In other words, this flywheel represents a straight upgrade from the stock unit, with durability and modest performance gains in mind. Coupled with an aftermarket clutch, it’d make a fine addition to a street-tuned engine for handling mid-range torque figures.

According to the company’s website, the 6-bolt crank flywheel’s specifications are as follows:

  • Weighs 12.65 lbs
  • 164 Tooth R.Gear, 6 Bolt Crank, and 0 oz Counter Balance
  • SFI Spec 1.1 Approved
  • Billet Aluminum
  • Mechanically Retained Starter Ring Gear
  • Replaceable Steel Friction Surface
  • Low Inertia / Light Weight

As mentioned previously, the 8-bolt crank’s specs are identical in every detail, save the drilling, obviously.

As Centerforce states, these flywheels were developed specifically with the Mustang in mind. The 6-bolt fits 1996-2010 Mustang GT’s. The 8-bolt, on the other hand, covers a wide range of performance Mustangs. Including: 1996-2001 and 2005-17 Ford Mustang GT (with 8-bolt crank), 1996-99, 2001 and 2003-04 Mustang SVT Cobra, 2007-08 Mustang Shelby GT500, 2009-10 Mustang Cobra Jet, and 2012-13 Mustang Boss 302, according to their press release.

I've been an automotive aficionado since I had baby teeth. My path was set when I first leaned on my grandfather's classic Porsche as I learned how to walk. One of my first memories was my mother sitting me behind the wheel of her Pontiac and talking me through the instrumentation and controls. Even though I was a mere three or four years old, I was instantly sold, and filled notebooks with technical drawings, sketches, and collections of manuals of all sorts of cars. I've actively tracked developments in automotive and motorsport technology for well over 20 years, and pride myself on being intimately familiar with the functions and history of a wide range of vehicles.
