How-To Tuesday: Fix a Crack in Your Dashboard

Exposure to the sun’s powerful UV rays can cause all sorts of damage to a car, both inside and out. Clear coat fades, rubber seals dry up, and on the inside of your car it can create ugly cracks on your dashboard. These eyesores are not the easiest thing to repair, as they require full removal of the dashboard. But if you’re doing a restoration, sometimes it’s the only way. Aftermarket parts are scarce, as well, which makes this short how-to video even more valuable.

As with anything that needs an epoxy or paint, you’ll need to do some surface prep to begin with. De-lamination of the surfaces should be smoothed down, and that’s done with a circular grinder. In this instance, the mesh for the speakers is also being removed, so a higher amount of epoxy is being applied than the amount used for just a crack. That epoxy, by the way, is flexible in order to make sure that a crack doesn’t re-appear in the same place. Once it has dried, the same grinder is used to even out the imperfections, give it a smooth surface, and get it ready for paint.
