12MustangBoss302_135_HR.jpgThe process of making your Mustang lower down to the ground is relatively straightforward and can be done at home with a few basic tools and materials. However, this procedure is also potentially dangerous, as you’re dealing with heavy machinery and powerful springs that you’ll need to reset and replace. It’s important to always exercise caution when changing the suspension kit on your Mustang in any way, particularly when you install a new lowering kit. For those who do take the time to properly lower their cars, however, the distinctive appearance of their new Mustang is a good way to distinguish their vehicle from others like it on the road, and to make it a highly personalized driving experience.

Step 1 — Gather Up the Right Materials

You’ll need the following tools and materials in order to lower your Mustang vehicle:

-New suspension and springs kit
-Torque wrench
-Hydraulic jack
-Jack stands (two tall ones)
-Cro bar
-Breaker bar
-Socket wrench and spare sockets
-Additional assistant to help with the project

Step 2 — Prepare the Mustang

Begin by parking the car on a flat and even space with lots of room around it. Use the torque wrench to loosen the lug nuts on your front rims without fully removing them. Open up the hood and be sure to set the emergency break on the car. Jack up the front end of the car so that it is evenly off of the ground and you can access the underside of the car with ease. Place the jack stands toward the front end of the car on both sides so that you’ll have plenty of room. Support the jack stands underneath the frame of the car to keep it secure.

Step 3 — Remove the Front Springs

Turn the steering wheel all the way to right before you remove the driver’s side spring. Use your breaker bar to cut the caliper bolts on the driver’s side so that you can remove the spring. Then turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and repeat the process for the caliper bolts and the spring on the passenger’s side of the front end of the car. Be very careful while you work, as the springs are highly compressed and can be very dangerous. It’s helpful to decompress the strings before you work so that they’re less likely to cause damage.

Step 4 — Install New Front Springs

Line up the front springs with the A-Arms in the car and place the springs in the bottom isolators. Use the springs in the A-Arms with the help of an assistant, who should push the A-Arm out of the way while you install the spring in place. Be careful as you do so, as the spring will be highly compressed and may cause damage. Secure the caliper and the struts back into place to allow the front springs to lock into the position that they should be in.

Step 5 — Replace the Rear Springs

The rear springs are much simpler and less dangerous to replace than the front springs. Mount the rear of the car up on the jack stands so that the back portion of the vehicle is hanging free. Remove the shocks and then move the jack so that the axles are lifted up additionally. Then remove the rear springs in the same manner as you removed the front springs. You’ll then need to have a friend help to hold the caliper back as you replace the rear springs one at a time.

Once you’ve completed these parts of the procedure, you can safely remove your vehicle from the jack stands and lower it back to the ground. Check on all of the different components that you’ve loosened to be sure that they’re tight once again, and fully replaced as necessary.
