Ice White, Baby: New Ice White Edition Mustang and Mustang Mach-E

Ice White Edition Mustang

Looking for the opposite of a murdered-out ride? Then an Ice White Edition Mustang is just the ticket.

Back in 1993, the Fox Body was wrapping up its epic 15-year run. So to celebrate, Ford released the limited-production Feature Edition, which had white paint, white wheels, and a white interior. With just 3,000 made, they’re relatively rare, if not particularly valuable. But if you’re looking for a modern twist on that snow-blind style, you’re in luck. Because the Blue Oval has just announced the Ice White Edition Appearance Package for the 2022 Mustang and Mustang Mach-E, which gives current-vintage Ponies a similar flare.

While all of the Clinton-era cars were droptops, this time around, it’s the only the coupes — and the new crossover — that are getting the treatment. The standard Mustangs will be finished in Oxford White, have a black and white interior, and also get unique 19-inch wheels with white accents. In my opinion, the wheels are a big improvement over the earlier cars, as the all-white units are kind of precious, and didn’t age well. As it is, it’ll be hard enough keeping these babies free of brake dust.

Though the interiors will get a similar contrasting theme, Mach-E models will be slightly different, in that the sheet metal will sport Star White Metallic paint. Of course, trying to tell the difference between the two exterior colors from pictures is likely pointless, and makes me think of the famous business card scene in American Psycho. Because at this resolution? They’re both as white as a yeti eating mayonnaise on an artic tundra. But I’d bet that in person, eagle-eyed folks will be able to see a difference.

Unlike the earlier triple-white cars, Ford hasn’t announced a cap on production for the modern models. But the Ice White package will only be available on EcoBoost and GT cars, and the Premium Grade on the Mach-E crossover. The order books will open in the fall, and while deliveries are slated to start early in 2022, the ongoing pandemic — not to mention the global chip shortage —could very well throw that timeline into question. So if you’re looking to score one of these trick Ponies, I’d advise you to be patient.

While it’s a bit off topic, reading this announcement made me think of all the murdered-out rides I’ve seen over the years — and one stands out in particular. I saw it during SEMA 2012, the first show since Carroll Shelby had passed, and it was a triple-black Shelby Mustang, parked on the sidewalk directly in front of the Ferrari dealership. There was no sign, no flowers, no mention of the hot rod legend that had left us, but the message was clear. It was, by a country mile, the coolest tribute to Shelby I saw that year, and showed that while he gave Maranello hell, Ferrari respected the brash Texan to the end.
